When you are at the main menu that allows you to view you playercard or pick a match you can press select and change the search preference. The icon is at the bottom of the screen. It gives you the choice of default,local or local only. The last 2 might take a second or 2 longer to find a match. Local only is the best way to go especially if you run solo sometimes.

nixon I checked that setting and it was set to local only... go figure

For me Local Only ends up being local, or two countries to the south. The flaw with this setting is that it will connect you to a local host, but the other people in the lobby can be from anywhere depending on their setting, and if the host leaves it ends up being meaningless.
Still do it though.
