| I posted this elsewhere but its relevat here too. - Quote :
- If you are directly connected to a modem, or have your PS3 in a DMZ.....you still have a firewall. Cable providers have their on firewalls that you cannot disable due to their own fear of liability. However, using port forwarding will 100% open that port in their firewall as well. This means that Port forwarding is actually more beneficial than a DMZ, a Modem, or even disabling your firewall completely.

| I did not know that the cable providers had their own firewalls or that port forwarding would bypass the providers firewall. I will have to look more into that. I am not the best or brightest when it comes to IT stuff, but that is what I have you all for. |

| They have firewalls, but mainly for their internal networks to keep from getting hacked or DDOS attacks. The firewalls are not there for your protection. It is to keep them from going down due to jackholes like anonymous or other folks. The firewalls you generally pass through to get to places are within border routers and they are generally passive firewalls just watching the packets that get sent through their border routers in their network.
It is a bit complicated but the concept is everyone in the world contributes with passing traffic around the world.

| Wikipedia is your friend: - Quote :
In computer security, a DMZ (sometimes referred to as a perimeter networking) is a physical or logical subnetwork that contains and exposes an organization's external-facing services to a larger untrusted network, usually the Internet. The purpose of a DMZ is to add an additional layer of security to an organization's local area network (LAN); an external attacker only has access to equipment in the DMZ, rather than any other part of the network. The name is derived from the term "demilitarized zone", an area between nation states in which military action is not permitted.
