With current world politics and instability, and the trailer art, it makes sense. Its an intriguing idea anyway.

Christ the guy sounds like a conspiracy theorist haha.
Why do i think this will be another stupid, "russia/china etc. has invaded and taken control of us and rag-tag groups of ex military and civilians band together to fight them". The "save us all" thing makes me want this to be alien invasion... but that would be too cool for CoD.

I can definitely see some sort of militia theme. If you think about it, it opens up more opportunities for micro transactions. No standard uniforms so you can purchase random gear, gun skins and of course you have to be able to purchase a ton of masks Thinking from a pure money making perspective this would be the best route to go. It also sounds like a cool concept especially if we can make a little Danny get up on the truck and piss in the radiator.

I think he nailed it with the guerrilla warfare reference. I am really hoping to have customizable characters and weapons.

It all sounds plausible. In the video comments, someone said maybe there was a nuclear war and a lot of the high tech stuff got wiped out, so they have to fall back on older (i.e. current day) weapons.
FYI, the driftor video he references is below. I think someone has posted it before, but I didn't know what he was talking about:
