| From http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/15/ea-getting-rid-of-online-passes - Quote :
- Online Passes – the controversial attempt by many publishers to encourage new game sales by locking online-centric content for used copies – has become engrained in gaming culture over the last several years. But according to a report on VentureBeat, one major company is doing away with them.
Electronic Arts – the mega-publisher behind a litany of games including Madden, FIFA, Battlefield, Dead Space, Mass Effect and more – will be “discontinuing” its Online Pass initiative. In a statement provided to VentureBeat, EA’s John Reseburg said that “none of our new EA titles will include that feature.”
Reseburg admitted that Online Passes just don’t seem to be working. “Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format. We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.”
Many major publishers – including Sony and Ubisoft – continue to use Online Passes, though interestingly, Microsoft never seemed to go down that road. Will EA’s abolishment of this system coerce other publishers to follow suit? Also: http://kotaku.com/ea-getting-rid-of-online-passes-507021364 | |

| I hope they do away the online pass... it never really made sense to me. If (Insert Auto Manufacturer Here) sold a car brand new to Jim and then he traded it in on something newer, would the guy that buys Jims old car have to pay (Insert Auto Manufacturer) additional money to take the car on the street? No they would not, because that wouldn't make any sense. | |

| This was another way for the companies to make more money on the folks that wanted to play their games. it was never a big deal to me, if i wanted the game for online multiplayer, i bought the game new. i wouldnt want someone selling me half a game, so i always kept those games and played the hell out of them lol. | |

| Really, what they should have done was charge everyone $10 to play it multiplayer. So if you buy it for $60 (or $50 or whatever), then it's single player only. To access online multiplayer stuff, everyone pays $10 for the online pass. | |
