The dedicated servers will only be on Xbox One and Xbox 360 (when the new fall dash comes out) due to the 300,000 Xbox Live Cloud servers they are bringing online in the fall. Sony has nowhere near the infrastructure for that mainly due to the free-to-play multiplayer for the past 10 years. Xbox also announced Kinect 2.0 is not required to use the Xbox One, so maybe they will offer a bundle without it coming up which would lower the cost to $399. We'll see though. Btw the Blitz mode on Ghosts looks super cool, I'm looking forward to playing clan v clan with all you guys!

^^^Agree to disagree. But we'll find out soon enough. You can laugh and point at me if i'm wrong and there are no dedicated servers for PS4's Ghosts. (but i think i'm right - or i hope at least haha)

Why did they wait so last minute to announce this? With Ghosts for XB1 releasing in November, the software should be close to production stamping/burning by now.

This kind of change (P2P -> DS) requires at least a SW change to the matchmaking/server GUI menus and displays, messages, etc.

Are they still changing and tweaking Ghosts matchmaking/menus code? Or was this always the plan and they're playing their last hand?
They are still building the game and will continue to build it right up until launch almost......and then after with patches.....

Also a nice move today to announce a free game with every launch edition xbox.  FIFA 14.  I don't play it but it appears MS wants more of the European/Latin markets.
With the current gen, as I recall the 360 sold more that the PS3 in the US, but not worldwide. So I think adding FIFA is one way to address it. Good move by MSFT.

the number of servers don't meant shit - I don't mean to be brash

the MS "cloud" is going to run hyper V which is MS' flavor of VM Ware which allows them to host 100's of "virtual servers" on one physical piece of hardware

the true benchmark there would then be total CPU and Memory for all the PHYSICAL hosts - if you have one huge giant "cluster"  or "farm" running all these VMs then you have one big mash up of CPU MHz and GB of ram to dish out.   For example if you had 10 physical servers with a single 2 GHz CPU in them but they were clustered you would be able to allocate "20 GHz" as a single CPU in a VM.  Hopefully that makes sense.

So the short version is - it all relies on the base physical hardware.  I guarantee you whatever number they're claiming is not physical hosts.

I just know they claim to have a lot of physical servers.

More than most people.  That's what they clam.

I really wouldn't know.

Sony probably has twice as many in reserve or something.

It is a win/win situation for me now. I basically play 2 games online, FIFA and CoD bounce cheers

I had decided to by the XB1 but I was not sure when. My idea was to wait until next year and continue playing CoD and fifa on the 360, and basically switch with FIFA 15. Now knowing there will be dedicated servers for CoD I have to go and place my pre-order.....

I may add my own pre-order now.

Waiting to here if the xbox 360 will have DS's as well like Frieghtrain rumored.

If the xb1 has servers but the 360 doesn't then it may be time to go ahead and upgrade.

This is a no brainer at this point for somebody who plays mostly CoD.

What a great day for folks who love CoD.

It's not really marketing....technically speaking they do have 300k+ servers....they just aren't all physical (nor should they be).  Same story for Amazon, Google, or any other cloud provider.  We use the same terminology in the company I work for....we have 3000 servers...most of which are virtual.  The number of physical servers isn't really the important number...just need to have enough of those to power the VMs.

Also Azure doesn't really use Hyper-V....at least not the consumer version...but that really has no bearing on game server hosting.

This might be a scam.  These are not "Ranked servers".  It is just hosting a game on the cloud like it is on PC.

Not sure what the scam part is, but dedicated server hosting like in the PC world is exactly what I want for COD on the console.

This is just a repost from the "PS4 Requires Plus Subscription to Play Online?" thread, but it belongs here as well...

I still haven't seen them state that they were going to "host" games on dedicated servers but that they were using dedicated servers for COD on the Xbox One. Are we certain that they are not meaning that they will use dedicated servers for match-making rather than game hosting? I really hope that it's true that they are hosting games on dedicated servers, I just haven't seen that explicitly stated anywhere.

If it is hosting COD games on dedicated servers and only the Xbox is doing this, then I will be getting Xbox Ones.

If anyone has any info directly from Activision or Microsoft on this I would be interested in reading it.

IW specifically said in the press conf today that dedicated server are being used to host multipayer matches.

"Mark Rubin, Executive Producer at Infinity Ward, took to the stage to announce “Call of Duty: Ghosts” on Xbox One will use Xbox Live Cloud hosting to provide dedicated servers for multiplayer matches, ensuring the best multiplayer experience will be on Xbox One. And, gamers will get all downloadable content for “Call of Duty: Ghosts” first on Xbox One and Xbox 360."

Also here is the tweet from IW:

Infinity Ward ✔ @InfinityWard

We will be using the Xbox Live Cloud for #CODGhosts. We'll be using this new feature to host Dedicated Servers for Xbox One players.

It has been made pretty darn clear that the xbox one will be getting dedicated servers to host multiplayer.

I don't think IW is trying to "trick" anybody. The reason we may not be hearing more is feared backlash that the news might not be "all good" for every version of Ghosts.

I have seen the server farm in Redmond. It has over 30,000 physical machines to run the current version of Xbox LIVE. They have 100 more farms globally setup on the OC-12 main trunk of the Internet to run cloud computing and the future services. It's not just hosting games, it's actually processing part of the game as well. The other farms combined processing power is better than every computer on Earth combined in 1999. That is huge. The games and everything else are going to be awesome going forward.

Haha....I've been there too...impressive. It's going to be interesting to see how/if developers take advantage of this.
