Next XBOX will require always online connection.

MS is not denying this as far as I can tell.

I'm wondering what yall think of this. The PS4 will not require always online connections (that is from Sony).

I have both systems and don't plan on buying either at release but will let the rest of you report back first and then find the first price drop most likely. Just how I roll.....

Anyway, will this cause any xboxer's to flip? I'm always online anyway but I still don't like the idea.

Ya, that's not ok, sucks enough we have to pay to play, now there gonna try to force us online? Looks like a PS4 is in my future.

I don't really see any benefits of always online games. We all know that every game seems to server issues with their multiplayer at launch. Ask people who bought Sims or bought Defiance about how much they enjoyed not playing after launch. Hell how many people just played Combat Training or the campaign when BLOPS2 was at it's worst. There are a ton of good games out there that have no need to be always online so this rumored move by Xbox is strange.

If there are benefits, I am willing to listen. But, I only see restrictions at this point

I am not happy with this either I am started out on the PS3 side and switched to MS due to more friends on it and more stable network. However if you check out the link I just posted there was an employee from MS that pretty much said deal with it and was being a complete asshat about the whole thing. Since the first time I read it Major Nelson got on and apologized for the asshat's comments. But it really depends on the used game market and other factors before I am going to make my choice. I have to get two of whatever system I get due to that the wife will want one as well.

^^^I'm with you Nuke. If there is some added benefit i'll likely be ok with it and get the next gen xbox. If it's really just an attempt to DRM everything and prevent or charge for used games... i'll probably get the PS4. With Destiny, BF4 and the next CoD on PS4... M$ only has Halo for me. I'm not a fanboy for any camp... i usually own every console of each "generation"... but this always online rumor would be really annoying and really make me think about it.

Yeah i read that this morning and that shit pissed me off. An actual M$ employee (creative director i think?) saying so what deal with it... basically confirming the always online rumor. If they really take that approach... PS4 all the way... everyone should boycott the next xbox if their message becomes "deal with it".

Just speculation here, but I'm betting this is about eliminating the bootleg game market throughout the world. If these companies want to get paying customers in emerging markets like China and India, they need to be able to police this themselves. Most of the music and videos that you'd buy there are bootleg and I'm sure games are the same.
So, I'll bet you 100 bucks that they've(all console makers) got together and coordinated this, so they'll ALL be doing the same thing.

I don't know how high quality internet service they'll require, most of the world doesn't have access to broadband, so it'll probably require just enough to verify the game on their servers. Otherwise they'll be shutting out a good # of people in the rural areas.

Sony has come out and said that they will not require always online connection. Their system will allow it, but they want to put that on the developers to do if they want. That way as a console company they can try and stay out of it and keep selling more units.

Looks like the xbox guy got canned. Further confirmation that "Always On Connection" is coming. If it wasn't, they would just say so (at some point, not necessarily now) and everything would be fine. Instead, the guy spilled the beans on something that MSFT probably wanted to discuss in a more controlled environment, so they had to let him go. If only as an example of what happens to people that break the NDA.

I'm very interested to see what Microsoft is going to do with the nextBox.

As xbox live has grown and grown I think apps like Netflix, Hulu, Prime...Fios, Uverse....these are going to see as much use by the consumers as the gaming part of the xbox. My friends list indicates this may have already occurred.

I have a friend who picked up an xbox over the holidays. She isn't much of a gamer. She got it so she could play games if she wanted but just as much was as another media center type thing besides her Roku.....she, like many these days, dumped cable for Netflix/Hulu only.....

I use the ESPN3 app all the time as well as Netflix/Prime movies. It probably totals to more hours than gaming if I added it all up.

^^^ Yeah i read that and the wording was interesting to say the least. Evidently he "resigned" but they wouldn't say if it was a voluntary resignation or forced resignation. We all know the guy was sacked for spilling the beans (or confirming said spill) and telling everyone to basically suck it.

NextBox better be some amazing shit with some groundbreaking hardware (fuck social, Nexflix bull shit) or PS4 is going to trounce it.

PS4 sorta faces the same battle that xbox faced when it originally launched.

That being that the youngins like me were PS guys and had to be sold on the xbox.

The under 20 crowd is nearly all xboxers from what I can tell. My kid hasn't mentioned a PS4 but is yacking about the next xbox....he is saving up for it right now.

The netflix and social stuff is very big with the under 25 group.....the future....and they, in general, are more likely to be on the xbox rather than the PS3.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
