| I noticed a few days ago that my xbox wouldn't turn off. I've used both the controller and the button on the console. It will shut off, but immediately turn back on. To turn it off I end up having to unplug power cord. I walked away from it tuesday night and thought everything was off, but the next morning it was sitting there running. It might just turn on all on its own.
Then I tried to get on for a few games late last night and I couldn't get it to turn on, or at least I couldn't get it to the dashboard. I'd get the opening animation of the big Xbox "X", but then it would hang up before the dashboard could load...I read some stuff and thought maybe it was an HDMI problem, tried a different monitor, different cable, nothing different.
Then removed the HDD and it started right up. Put the HDD back on, same problem. Removed HDD and it started right up. Then I read that you could start it on the disc instead of loading dashboard, so I changed settings and I got it going. When I left it last night it was working with the HDD attached, but we'll see the next time I try to get on. I don't know if I scrambled something a little unplugging the machine while it was doing its stupid rebooting or what.
Anybody have anything like this happen?
Will any USB drive work for storage? If I get it going again I might have to transfer all my downloaded stuff, 64+ Gb would take me about a month to redownload if my HDD is going bad. But I don't know if my HDD is the problem, or simply a casualty of the reboot/restart problem.

| IT'S ALIVE! lol Sounds very odd that it won't shot off. There is no command in the OS to turn it off? You just have to press a button? | |

| If you hold the xbox home button on the controller for 3 sec, you'll get an option to turn off the console.
I wonder if the power switch is damaged (stuck open or short). Maybe being forceful with the switch will knock it back to 'unstuck'.

| A similar problem happened to me. Wouldn't shut off or would come right back on after powering off. After a week or two of that, I got 3 red rings and it was dead. Don't wanna be a Debbie Downer but this sounds similar. I had an original Xbox 360 and it ran great for over 5 years (which I hear is kind of rare). Have you had your 360 for a long time? | |

| Is it possible it's the Xbox button on your controller? Try leaving the controller unplugged and see if it's still trying to start up. | |

| I think I might have just eliminated(I can't say its fixed) the problem. I turned of cloud storage(which I never use) and disabled background downloads. It just shut off fine. We'll see if it happens again.
I sure hope my console doesn't crap out on me now, I got it right before the slim came out(whenever that was 2008 or 09?) so its been around for quite a few years. I wish I had the slim because it has the optical out on the console. I have to run the adapter cable that came with the unit(plastic removed)for optical audio and the HDMI cable into my monitor. It works, but its messy and for some reason it takes longer to boot the console compared to an HDMI only.

| btw blue xbox won't let you utilize anything larger than 16gb from an external source (flash drive or external hard drive) they did this on purpose since that media is cheaper than the "xbox hard drives" they want you to purchase
my xbox was locking up occasionlly in any given game and i too would turn the xbox on and get stuck at a xbox logo with the spinning swirl and not have the dashboard load...after i replaced the hard drive it stopped doing that
i needed a larger drive anyhow with all the digital downloads ive been racking up lately fwiw I just purchased a 320gb drive from amazon for 60 bucks w/transfer cable (new)
