| My son wants a Game Capture device for Christmas, specifically, he asked for the ElGato Game Capture HD. I wasn't happy with the Newegg reviews, but really don't know anything about them. I did see that the Hauppauge HD PVR2 had good reviews.
So...in the $159.00 range, what would you recommend?
Thanks. | |

| I have a Hauppauge and if I were to buy one right now, I would get the Elgato. It's just easier to use. My Hauppauge is glitchy sometimes. Just loses connection to my laptop randomly. | |

| ElGato. The flashback recording is great. Just turn it on and you can passively record up to about 2.5 hours that keeps rolling as you play. You can then go back and keep the whole thing or just retroactively record from a spot and keep it. If you don't want to keep any of it then you shut it down and it goes away. | |

| Im with the other guys. I have an Elgato and it works well. Keep in mind you also need a decent laptop or PC to connect it to thats running Windows 7. I tried running it on XP with no luck.
Is he also wanting to record game chat?? I've been recording the team chat and also using a USB microphone(~$25) to record my audio.

| elgato has my vote - its reasonably priced, doesn't require external power (powered via usb), small footprint, good quality (video bitrate up to 15mbit), most importantly (to me) can be used cross platform (xbox, ps, and even pc) | |

| That passive recording is really nice. I try to limit myself to at the most 3 games (about 30 min) when I record so the files are so massive. I have to physically hit record/stop every time. I'm constantly scrambling to get the recording going before a game starts and its annoying.
Elgato. | |

| Ok this looks pretty cool Does the Elegato work with a PS4? I noticed it is Mac OS X 10.7 or later, Windows 7 or later. | |

| Currently the ps4's hdmi output has hdcp enabled when playing games so the elgato won't record. There's supposed to be a firmware fix from sony for this in the future to disable hdcp when gaming. But I've read where you can buy a generic hdmi splitter online that bypasses the hdcp restrictions and will allow you to record. | |

| Ok... so what is HDCP? Oh wait, i just heard of this thing where you can look up stuff and get answers. It told me all about HDCP. lol
Looks like they haven't said when the update will come huh? I guess this Elegato thing is one less gadget for me to buy then. haha

| Alright Elgato is unanimous, I'll put the order in.
Mr. BlackDeath actually recommended this about 6 months ago, but I know that's like 7 in technology years, or dog years, or restraining orders or something, so I wanted to throw it out there again.
Thanks again everyone.

| Definitely the Elgato. Easy setup, easy to use, great quality. I have used a couple others and they didn't compare to the Elgato. The flashback recording is very nice. Your son will love it! | |

| I have both, the Elgato is hands down the better choice, but like was said you need a good computer to run it. | |

| Although it may seem like a CON to need a PC to use an elgato - but since the elgato does all the encoding (not the PC) the PC doesn't have to be anything special
if you don't have anything to use PM me I may have another FUYEL laptop I can send you
