| If I understood the premise, the system would use the phone's CPU and GPU? If that's the case I don't know that we would see phones that are on par with the PS4 and One in the near future. From what I've seen (I've been out of the industry for about 8 years so I don't pay as much attention) CPUs have gotten better at handling multiple threads and GPUs have gotten better in processing power/speed, but not in leaps and bounds as they once did.
Like I stated, I haven't been as on top of the future tech as I once was but I would be surprised to see something comparable to the console or PC level of games on a phone. Now, could they take away casual gamers, supply games that are more like older generation consoles, and control tv functionality? Sure, and with the developers complaining that they can't sustain their studios with the current model, I could see this in the future. We could have PCs for "gamers" and phones for the rest.

| Perhaps the whole cloud gaming thing? Apple TV/iphone/ipad is just the gateway to some server farm that houses the everything that the console used to do. Isn't that the point of the whole 300,000 servers MSFT is getting? To handle the brunt of the work of the video game?
And really, if you take MSFT's original ideas to the extreme, why even bother with a download toa local system? Why not just have people log-in online and stream to play?

| If you watch the latest Microsoft commercials you will see clearly the goal of these two giants.
Apple and MS are sitting on cash like few can imagine. They both want to rule this new coming integrated future.....and it is coming whether people like the idea or not. Most all will like this new stuff.
A big part of this is MS having "One experience on everything"
It is the entire marketing campaign.
You are going to be running a Win 8 computer at some point. They want to make strides in the phones and some say they are doing better. Win 8 is supposed to be a tablet friendly system, I don't know as I run 7 and have Ipads ha ha
It is their plan though. That when I buy my xbox I get my first taste (me personally, might be a phone or tablet or laptop for another) and then I get a new laptop with Win 8 and it does it's thing....which influences my next phone purchase to be Win 8 friendly. Kinect I think is crucial for them on the xbox side with this plan. It is a long term plan.
Apple is using the apple tv thing to get into the living room part. They have the other three going already. Same plan, the real direct competion imo to MS is not Sony and the Playstation......they view them as secondary adversary.
Where MS currently does hold the big edge.....and a unique spot....is gaming over Apple.
It is all fun to watch and we should all benefit long term. |

| Apple will start to cover HUGE ground now that they have this controller "standard" set forth for all manufacturers. Developers will be making games specifically for these controllers in mind. Shit's going to get real in the next 5 years as most gamers nowadays aren't really "gamers". They're the guys/gals who own only CoD and Madden... ones who spend hours in Peggle, Doodle Jump and Candy Crush. They want some simple "i dont give a fuck" relaxing game time then they are done. Casual gaming is the future of the majority. The MMO playing Skyrim loving JRPG worshiping hardcore gamers will gradually fade to the "steam box" realm. I don't see a next generation of consoles after this one in 10 years. At least anything remotely like they are today. Apple knows this... and everyone has been scrambling. M$ tried to do the whole digital future thing with the One as a preemptive strike... Sony decided we'll go the opposite direction and focus on the hardcore gamers. Everyone knows Apple/Google/Samsung will be making moves soon... it will be interesting to see how it happens. | |

| I agree Gun.
This will be big if they can get some games going in the next few years. Gaming has really shifted in the last few years towards tablet and phone games. The coming generation of gamers are in love with those things.
Apple has more cash than anyone right now and take risks. They have a really popular brand name and consumer following to start with too. |

| Gun, I have to say that I would be surprised if Google and Samsung didn't partner up for the challenge as they seem to work together often; it would make it interesting.
Walldoggy, until the internet speeds reach the level that broadband providers have promised (and the tax-payers have payed billions in subsidies for) then cloud gaming would have far too much lag to work. Even with GB speeds there would be some issues and hiccoughs that would deter most of the big game buyers. I think that it's much more likely that what I stated in my second paragraph is the more likely scenario.

| @Okra: Yes they do man... and they are sickly popular. I remember when i got into Apple it wasn't "cool" as many here probably remember. It was what the graphic designers bought and photographers. Now... well, someone said it best, i forgot who. They said "Apple is a marketing and design firm who happens to also make products". They're not selling computers and MP3 players and tablets... they're selling image. Apple bottled "cool" in with the iPod in 2001. [i honestly feel dorky with Apple gear nowadays b/c every f'n 10 year old and soccer mom has a damn iPhone and shit... but i'm already too deep. Apple was fucking genius with their ecosystem... get you in and get you invested and hooked... you have to stay.] @Doam: Ah i didn't even think of that Doam! They could do a f'n Google Nexus console!!!?? Ok, holy shit i might buy that haha. Then again... i'll be buying whatever apple puts out too as i've already many thousands of $$ invested in the ecosystem. I'd honestly love to play some of the cooler iOS games on my TV with a nice controller. I can spend hours in Zenbound2 or some Frozen Synapse etc. | |

| I have a Windows Phone 8... and i actually love it haha! Switched from having every single model of the iPhone... right to a WP8. Its AWESOME for phones... for computers... yuck. Not until they have a better touch interface for desktops and laptops. I want a laptop with dual screens like a Nintendo DS! The bottom one can display a virtual keyboard with haptic feedback or be used as more screen realestate! Apple... make me one STAT! haha | |

| ehhh im thinking 95 and 98 were personal preferences. I don't remember 98 being all that good or bad honestly. but then again we were pretty young and to be honest if you had a pc and the internets you were looking up porn at that time. | |

| Current Apple TV allows you to stream certain online content, plus whatever is on your iphone/ipad. I think the point of the article was that by a) creating the standard for game controllers and b) introducing a new, faster wireless protocol to increase the quality of the streams, Apple was positioning itself to slowly take over as a gaming/living room controlling device of the future.
I mean, it already has the second screen that the Wii U/PS Vita only hope to be in the ipad. With better steaming of content from that second screen, if it adds broadcast TV, then suddenly they have the whole ecosystem. TV and Internet video (hulu, netflix, etc.) via the ipad/iphone streaming to the TV. Games with actual workable game controllers. Voice control with Siri. A low cost Apple TV device at $100 is MUCH more appealing to the regular Joe, especially if they already have a couple ipads and iphones in the house.
Obviously there are some missing steps in there, namely gaming content, but I think for most of the general public, it would be enough to play Candy Crush or Temple Run on the TV.

| See, i dont know if it will really catch on. You can already do that no problem with most android devices and the hdmi input. on top of that, you can use a ps3 controller to play it as well. Apple does not play nice with anything else. Even if they have made a new stronger wifi, they are not sharing with the rest of the community. This is their downfall. They are like Jurassic park of the computer world...only the rich kids get to see and play with the toys. | |

| I don't want Apple to try and control my living room either. I refuse to buy anything Apple, I had my IIe and that was enough | |

| Win 2k was great. I had it on everything up until they quit supporting it.
Back to Apple and MS, I use both, and Love and Hate equally.
